Icons of Mary holding her Son Jesus have been popular since the Council of Ephesus which in 431 solemnly declared Mary to be the Theotokos or Mother of God.
St. Luke was the first one who painted the "Theotokos", "Mother of God", while she was still alive. He is credited with three icons of the "Panagia", in one case using the wooden table where Mary and St. John ate their meals.
Throughout history, many Icons of the Most Holy Mother of God have had miracles attributed to them.
In addition, there are those Icons which may not have been miracle working, but still been venerated with the hope of intercession from the Mother of God.

The name of this icon comes from the opening words of a hymn dedicated to the Most Holy Theotokos, The Virgin Mary is represented here as the Queen of Heaven enjoying btiss in Paradise amid angels glorifying Her- Behind the Mother of God is a light many-dome church, a symbol of the Heavenly Jerusalem, with the blossoming garden of Eden around it. At the foot of the throne on which the Virgin Mary with the Pre-Eterna] Infant sits St, John of Damascus is depicted, the famous theologian and the author of the hymn, holding an unfurled scroll with the text of the hymn in his hands. Down below is a crowd of people praising the Most Holy Theotokos, There is no special feast day in honor of this icon.
